Chapter Twenty-two

“Lee that good, Will?”

Willa’s eyes flew open and she sat up in bed at the sound of Nicole’s voice from the doorway. “What?”

“It’s nearly ten o’clock.” Nicole wagged her eyebrows and held up two mugs of coffee.

Willa looked around her bedroom, sunlight streaming in. She didn’t remember going to sleep, but it must have been sometime after placing the spirit board on her dresser. “Where did you find that?” Willa asked, glaring at it.

“What?” Nicole stepped into the room, following Willa’s gaze, and looked at the box.

“Holy shit, is that a Ouija board? Is it yours?” She set the mugs down and ran a hand over the carved letters and numbers.

Willa swung out of bed and joined her at the dresser. Her eyes were grainy with fatigue and her heart heavy with worry. “Don’t mess around with me, Nicole. Not about this.”

“What are you talking about?”

Willa crossed her arms. “You had it out last night. I saw you using it.”

“No way in hell,” Nicole scoffed. “Those things freak me out. Don’t you know you should never mess with the other side ?”

Willa’s jaw clenched furiously. “Stop it, Nicole.”

“What’s your problem? That’s a line from your first book, Will. Yes, I read them.” She frowned. “What happened to Lee last night, anyway? You better not have broken her heart already. I like her.” Nicole left the mug for Willa and headed back down the hall. “You wanna go for a walk?”

Willa stared at the spirit board, massaging her aching temples. Maybe Lee was right and she was out of her mind. “I’m going to grab a shower first.”

Willa grabbed her towel and headed to the bathroom, stopping outside Nicole’s room. She leaned down the hall and could see Nicole staring at her phone, swiping through screens so she thought it safe to go in for a minute without igniting another argument.

The room was a mess as usual, the clothes even having closed over the clear space on the floor from only hours before. She sighed, not even knowing what she was looking for. She opened the closet and jumped back when an old ratty backpack fell from the top shelf.

She recognized it as her own from the night Emily died. Emily took it back with her when Lee walked her home and obviously stuck it in the top of the closet, or someone had at some point. Willa put it back, unsure what she was supposed to do about it now.

“Can we go up instead of down by the water?” Nicole asked.

“Sure,” Willa replied when she finally emerged, clean and somewhat refreshed, wearing comfortable cargo pants and a thin, loose-fitting button-down along with her sport sandals.

“You going to see Lee today? Straighten things out?” Nicole laughed. “Ha! See what I did there?”

“Very clever.” Willa couldn’t help a small smile at Nicole’s effort to be cheery. “I would like to. She was really hurt and very upset with me but I don’t understand what happened. She seems to think I have some agenda for being here.
